Our commitment
A Race Against Blindness exists because children are losing their sight. Many of the people we serve are blind or have low vision, and our websites have to work for them first. We are committed to making araceagainstblindness.org, fundraiser.araceagainstblindness.org and donor.araceagainstblindness.org usable by everyone, including people who use screen readers, screen magnification, keyboard-only navigation, voice control, or who need high contrast, larger text or reduced motion.
The standard we work to
Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, the current W3C recommendation. Meeting WCAG 2.2 AA also meets WCAG 2.1 AA, the standard referenced in US regulations and settlements.
Where we stand
Our sites are partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA: automated testing finds few defects, the exceptions below are known to us and scheduled for repair, and manual testing is still under way. We say "partially conformant" rather than "compliant" because conformance has to be re-earned with every change, and because automated tests catch only part of what matters; we do not claim full conformance for any page.
What we have done. Semantic headings, landmarks, labels and link names; a skip-to-content link; visible keyboard focus; color contrast checked against AA ratios; text that reflows at 200% zoom and on mobile; alternative text for meaningful images; captions on our YouTube videos (automatic captions where we have not yet added our own); a sign-in for the donor portal that uses a one-time link or code instead of a password; and automated accessibility checks (axe-core) run on representative pages of each site before and after releases.
How we test. Automated scanning with axe-core across representative pages of all three sites (last run October 24, 2026). Manual keyboard-only and screen-reader testing (NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver) of the key journeys, which are finding a condition in the Education Hub, donating and entering a fundraiser, signing in to the donor portal and contacting us, has not yet been completed; it is our next step, and we will record the date and results here when it is done. We also intend to commission an independent review with blind and low-vision testers and publish its summary on this page.
Known limitations (as of October 24, 2026)
| Issue | Where | What we are doing | Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two footer links in the privacy group are smaller than the 24 by 24 pixel minimum target size (WCAG 2.5.8) | Every page of araceagainstblindness.org | Enlarged in the November 2026 footer update | November 2026 |
| Trial-phase badges use an ARIA label on an element that does not support one, which some screen readers read inconsistently (WCAG 4.1.2) | Education Hub home | Replacing with visible text and correct roles | November 2026 |
| The bot-protection widget on the donor portal sign-in is a third-party component with a known markup defect (WCAG 4.1.2), and we are reviewing whether it meets the new Accessible Authentication criterion (WCAG 3.3.8) | donor.araceagainstblindness.org | Reviewing alternatives with the vendor; the one-time code sent by email is the accessible path | Ongoing |
| Some product and banner images have no alternative text in our image library (WCAG 1.1.1) | Fundraiser store | Adding alternative text to the image library; product images now fall back to the product name | December 2026 |
| Pause controls on moving carousels and background videos were added in October 2026 and are being refined; the theme's remaining carousel arrows are not yet keyboard-operable (WCAG 2.1.1) | Fundraiser store | Converting carousel arrows to buttons | December 2026 |
| Older blog posts and annual reports published as PDFs may lack tags, headings and alternative text | Blog archive; Annual Reports | Remediating on request within 5 business days; new PDFs are tagged | Ongoing |
| Some embedded YouTube videos lack audio description | Education Hub and fundraiser pages | Adding described versions or text transcripts for new videos; transcripts on request | Ongoing |
| Third-party content we do not control: Shopify checkout (Shopify's own conformance report lists 13 criteria as partially supported), Trustpilot review widgets, Klaviyo signup forms, Gorgias Help Center, PayPal and Apple Pay | Fundraiser store; Help Center | We choose vendors that publish conformance reports and raise defects with them; every task has an alternative path (below) | Ongoing |
Alternative ways to do everything
If anything on our sites is hard to use, you can still donate, enter, check entries or get help by phone at 855-439-0122 (relay users dial 7-1-1), by email at accessibility@araceagainstblindness.org, or by mail at A Race Against Blindness, 3317 S Higley Rd Ste 114-110, Gilbert, AZ 85297. We will complete the task with you or for you, and we will provide any document in large print, accessible PDF, plain text or audio on request.
Display preferences
Our sites respect your operating-system and browser settings for text size, contrast, dark mode and reduced motion, and work with the screen readers, magnifiers and voice-control tools you already use. araceagainstblindness.org and the donor portal use no overlay or toolbar product; accessibility is built into our code. The fundraiser store offers an optional third-party display toolbar (accessiBe accessWidget) with text-size, contrast, font and animation controls. The toolbar is a convenience for people who want those adjustments. It is not how we make the site accessible, we do not rely on it for conformance, and you can close it at any time; the site works with your own assistive technology without it. Its data practices are described in our Cookie and Tracking Notice.
Tell us about a barrier
We want to hear about anything that gets in your way. Email accessibility@araceagainstblindness.org, call 855-439-0122, use our Help Center at araceagainstblindness.org/pages/help-center, or write to the address above. Please tell us the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser and assistive technology you were using. We acknowledge every report within 2 business days, tell you what we found within 10 business days, and fix confirmed barriers that block a task as a priority. If you are not satisfied with our response, ask for it to be reviewed by one of our co-founders, who will reply within 10 business days.
Technical details
Our sites rely on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WAI-ARIA and SVG, and are built to work in the current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and TalkBack. The fundraiser store runs on Shopify, whose Checkout accessibility conformance report is published at shopify.com/accessibility.
